Overview
So what is success?
In essence, success is the final outcome of any goal we set for ourselves.
The ultimate reward for accomplishing a goal is success. Success is generally thought of as a reward for accomplishing anything that gives financial results, but in reality it is any kind of reward that occurs after we have achieved a goal. It could be anything from happiness to financial reward.
Musicians and guitarists often think of success as being famous, wealthy, and being seen as a very important individual. This is actually true when it comes to the ultimate reward we pursue.
It is not a good idea to lie to ourselves and try to find another valid reason for why we want to become successful musicians. Ultimately, it is the reward and the accomplishment that we are all looking for in life. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be in a position to have financial freedom, and to be considered very important?
There is no doubt that this is a nice reward, but it shouldn’t be your only reward. As well as this, there are many more doors that can open up when you reach new levels of success that can benefit your lifestyle in many different ways.
Ultimately, it is up to you to define success so that you will work for it. For example, if you truly care about financial freedom, then you should see success as becoming wealthy from the music you make or anything related to music.
Those who are passionate about becoming famous, should focus on becoming influential, regardless of whether or not it pays enough. If you just care about having a well balanced mix of these two situations, regardless of the reason, you should have a good understanding of when you’re successful.

Success is inherently dynamic not linear.
You can’t see success. It’s the mountain behind the one you just climbed that you hadn’t seen before, and it repeats in endless cycles.
When we talk about success, it may seem as if it is something set in stone, but the truth is that success is a dynamic process, which means that as soon as we have achieved our goal, and we feel as if we have succeeded, it is natural for us to find another goal for ourselves in the future.
Normally, as humans, we will always look up to the next level. Once we accomplish something, we will always want the next thing, which could become a problem if we don’t understand the process by which success is achieved. When we achieve something, we are naturally motivated to keep looking up. Once we have achieved something, we will always seek the next thing and the next thing.
This can be a problem if we don’t understand the process behind success. By understanding the nature of this, you will be able to help yourself comprehend why you are seeking more. In addition, you will be able to set your next goals within the boundaries of what is reasonable.
When we understand that success is dynamic, we look at the whole picture differently. Once we become famous, what would be the next step? – After we become wealthy, what would the next step be?
As soon as we recognize that this is the nature within us, we can approach success differently. We can set goals in a way that makes them easier to reach, and as you reach them, you become more and more successful in your life. Recognizing that success is dynamic is a good thing. It is very good.
It is more meaningful when success is viewed as a ladder of rewards, in which each level consists of a different reward for each goal we set, rather than one main reward.

- Having an understanding of the music business means knowing how the industry works so that you can navigate your way to success.
- Music theory refers to the amount of theoretical knowledge you have. I know dozens of people who have memorized hundreds of chords without ever succeeding. You can be an expert in theory and know hundreds of chords, but if you do not understand music success, you won’t succeed.
- When you have great skills, you might get noticed by somebody who will eventually help you become successful. Without knowledge or help, your chances of success are 50/50.
- The word network means having contacts, finding bands that can succeed or the right people in the industry that could be your ticket to success.
- As the name implies money refers to having the right amount of money to basically buy your way into the industry. This could be very costly since the market can be very confusing with so many scams out there that it could be very difficult to find where to invest.
- The odds that you will make it just by luck are just as high as the chances of winning the lottery.
Regardless of what others believe is important, there is no doubt that focusing on just the right things is the smartest way to reach our goal.
Skills Alone Don't Matter
Skills alone don't matter
Your success as a musician will depend on your ability to create good music and not just on your talent or skills.
Just like a house builder
Success comes from creating something.
For the sake of this example, let’s say you’re in the construction industry, and your job is to build houses for people to live in. You could have all the best tools, have plenty of them, and be extremely talented with them, but if you don’t build anything with them, they are useless.
When it comes to selling a house you built, buyers don’t care how well you used your saws, your hammers, or any other tools. If the house you built doesn’t appeal to them, they simply won’t pay for it.
The same applies to music. Regardless of how talented a guitarist you are or how many skills you have, your skills are meaningless until you create music.
Like a house buyer, your audience will not buy, share, or support your music if they don’t like it.
Despite the fact that this is a very obvious analogy, it is very crucial at the moment when most new guitarists focus heavily on skills rather than using them to create music.
TASK
Throughout this lesson, we learned that success isn’t just about one big reward, but about a series of smaller, more realistic rewards that lead to an overall better lifestyle.
Write down a list of small and realistic rewards that you think will improve your life by becoming a great guitarist. These rewards could be a new car, a bigger house, more money, more attention, etc.
Using this list will not only allow you to identify unrealistic ideas, but also remind you as you make progress whether or not any of these rewards have already been achieved without you realizing it.
