Lead Guitar
Lead guitar
Usually this is one of the main reasons why people choose to learn guitar in the first place. Playing lead guitar seems like a lot of fun, and it’s certainly what most of us envision from the very beginning, as we saw some of our favorite guitar players whom we admired and that inspired us to start learning. The role of a lead guitarist also comes with a number of limits, especially when it comes to the level of success that most of us are trying to achieve.
As far as the audience is concerned, the lead guitar of a band is the main guitar of the band, or the most significant guitar, but that is only true from the audience’s perspective. In the real world, we all know that music is created by every member of the band and every single little thing that they do is what creates the song that everyone enjoys.
Many bands from the 1980’s, 1990’s, and early 2000’s used to prioritize their lead guitarists, whereas in modern music this hasn’t been the case for many years. This is a good thing, let me elaborate on what I mean.
If you are wanting to play guitar for the sake of playing guitar solos try to understand a few very important things. We need to understand the difference between today’s music and music from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s when we’re trying to succeed as artists.
Throughout the years, a lot of things have changed. Some things have become more interesting, while some others have lost their appeal.
In modern days, lead guitars are not viewed in the same way as they used to be back then. Other instruments and sounds fill that space in today’s music. Even though there are still some music styles that maintain the traditions of the 1990’s when lead guitarists played an active role in the band, there have been significant changes in the music scene overall.
This is good in a way because it made everything more interesting with new sounds, and as a result, music in general is more appealing to audiences now. It is true that the role of the lead guitarist is still there, but it is not as important as it was in the 90’s.
The reason why I know it is better in a way is because it makes things a whole lot simpler for us when we are trying to succeed as artists, because there aren’t as many complicated things that we have to go through in order to reach our goals. Having said that, I can assure you that it’s not as fun as it used to be, but music should be used not for the sake of just having fun, but for the sake of making good music as well. There is no need to worry. The attention you get is still the same, and you have to do a lot less complicated things.
Now let’s take a closer look at what rhythm guitar is, what it was, and what it is becoming as we move forward.
Rhythm Guitar
Rhythm guitar
In the minds of many people, the rhythm guitar is just a strumming type of guitar, whose only function is to play chords and strums. In all honesty, I used to think that way as well. When I grew up, most of the bands that I grew up with were structured in the same manner.
I was so wrong about this. While rhythm guitar may not seem as exciting as lead guitar, it has a number of other things that lead guitar doesn’t have. For example, almost all songs are based on rhythm guitar. As well as that, as a rhythm guitarist, you are also able to sing along with the song or do background vocals as well. As a rhythm guitarist, you set the pace and rhythm of the song.
It wasn’t until I got into music production and songwriting that I completely changed my mind about guitar styles. I used to create songs that had rhythm guitars in them with progressively less lead guitars as I gained more experience.
In my opinion, when you create music purely for the sake of making something people truly like, it automatically results in you making music that is not just for fun anymore, but is actually enjoyable and is successful in conveying the message it was intended to deliver.
The role of rhythm guitar, in general, appears to be suited to someone who has more maturity when it comes to music in general since the role of it is essentially to make the song sound good and to maintain a firm sense of timing in the song. Nowadays, many lead guitarists who end up becoming the main singer of their band end up playing rhythm guitar most of the time or sometimes even playing a few touches of lead guitar.
What if both of them were combined into one?
This is where it gets interesting. It is always going to be a difficult choice to choose between the two styles, but in reality you do not have to choose between them. There is a way to have a successful experience by combining the two styles and I believe that will be a much better experience for you.
You are probably aware of this, but let me explain. The majority of guitarists who started off with the idea of becoming a lead guitarist in order to play riffs and solos and show off in front of a crowd have realized that there are limits to that style compared to a rhythm guitar style, so they choose to combine the two scenarios with tremendous success.
The chances of success
The chances of success
If you are realistic in your quest to achieve success, you could save years, if not your dream.
To become a successful individual as a whole, it’s very important to be realistic about pretty much everything in life and avoid living a lie. In music, this is also true. Being realistic and accepting what the world asks of us can make us more likely to succeed.
A lot of guitarists or musicians in general face this big issue which is purely based on the idea of being optimistic, which is usually a way to lie to yourself about something that might not turn out how you planned. Often, being optimistic is similar to gambling in many ways.
Lead guitar and rhythm guitar have very different chances of success.
Remember that as a lead guitarist, you’re always someone else’s guitarist. When you play rhythm guitar, you have some advantages like the fact that you can simultaneously sing and play guitar.
If you combine the two worlds, you can not only be a singer, rhythm guitarist and lead guitarist. This is the world you should explore.
TASK
The task consists of asking a few people a few questions.
Even though lead guitar is exciting, it’s important to understand the difference between rhythm and lead guitar, as well as combining the two. To complete this task, you will need to ask a few people the following questions.
- Can you name five lead or rhythm guitarists?
- Can you name five singers who play guitar?
I asked a few people these 2 questions, and 99% were unable to name more than one for the first question, and everybody was able to name five for the second question.
It is the purpose of this task for you to hear this from several people and draw your own conclusions. Success depends on the recognition of our work by the majority. Even if we can play guitar well, if we don’t sing as we play, people are unlikely to know who we are.
