SHOW OFF

As long as you don’t overdo it, showing off your skills occasionally boosts your confidence

The following section explains how you can accomplish this without appearing to be just showing off.

Showing Off

Showing off

As long as you don’t make it a way to make a living out of it, like most people do these days, it isn’t a bad thing to show off.

We don’t have to overdo this. Showing off is a great way to build confidence, and when done correctly, we don’t come across as if we are just trying to brag. The only way to avoid looking like that classic annoying and immature musician when it comes to showing off some of our skills is to know how, when and where to do it.

In my experience, I was never the kind of person who used to try to impress people, and I believe that being humble is one of the best ways to make people like you, not just because of who you are, but because they can see that you are not just trying to make someone think you are the best.

This is crucial since understanding how to listen to your audience rather than attempting to wow them will determine how successful you will be. No one cares about how excellent you are; they care only about how you make them feel. If you make them feel good by playing great music, they will be your lifelong supporters.

People on average are very competitive. They won’t like it if you just mention that you’re superior to them. Whether they play guitar or a similar instrument or even have a brother or a buddy who they admire, they will not appreciate it if you imply only that you are better than them.

If you make them feel uncomfortable in any way by attempting to demonstrate your skills in front of them, they will most likely never be your supporters.

I remember going to music stores and just wanting to browse or try new guitars or gear. Grabbing a guitar and playing it out loud just to show off was never my thing, and I used to get really annoyed by people who did this. So I know how that was really annoying from the perspective of people who were there to shop, and it only shows the lack of self-confidence when it was done incorrectly.

There are ways to show off without falling into the trap that is, in most cases, motivated by ego.

We’ll go over ways to show off your skills while maintaining the impression that you’re a real artist, not just another guitar player with no self-confidence.

Don't do this!

DON'T DO THIS

People only care about how you make them feel, not how fast you can play. Guitar riffs with no emotional resonance will attract the wrong kind of attention.

Typical fast and complex guitar riffs

How attractive do you think this is to most people?

Instead of just grabbing a guitar and jumping into fast, complex guitar riffs with the intention of just showing off, there are things that have a lot more impact, are better, easier, and don’t come across as if we’re just trying to show off.

Do this instead

DO THIS INSTEAD

Simple things with a huge impact get you the right kind of attention. Succeeding depends on getting the right attention. You have to remember that it is the quality of what we are playing that matters most, not the speed of what we are playing.

Please keep in mind that what we are trying to accomplish has nothing to do with a specific genre of music. Instead, it has to do with the way in which we approach it. It is not my intention to criticize music with guitar riffs such as those in the first example, since I too am a fan of these types of music.

Guitar riffs with attitude and simplicity

Here's what it sounds like

As simple as this sounds, it is more difficult to achieve since it is more about the quality of the notes being played as well as the feeling we are expressing. I think it sounds way nicer and much more mature than the previous approach.

However, I want to focus on how people expect us to show them what we’re all about. Although we are not here to show off, the riffs we played with attitude and simplicity are impressive enough for us to show that we can play.

Show off techniques

SHOW OFF TECHNIQUES

Remember, showing off doesn’t necessarily mean using extremely difficult or complex techniques. It is a science, or rather, a psychological understanding of how to effectively send the right message.

One of the most important things to bear in mind in this case is that what we are trying to accomplish is to simply attract the attention of an audience, and not just show off for the sake of showing off.

It doesn’t matter how impressed someone may seem on the surface, if you show off simply to show off, they’ll dislike you.

With that in mind, grab your guitar and let’s learn some of the best guitar techniques. It is in this section of the course that you will learn some of the best guitar tricks and techniques.
